There is a significant homeless population in Michigan. A small segment of this population consists of young adults and children. Among the young adults are those who have aged out of the Michigan foster care system. Former foster children between the ages of 17 and 26 years of age are highly susceptible to homelessness, drug abuse, unexpected pregnancies, and incarceration. Not only do they lack the resources for leading successful lives, they lack positive external influences. Unfortunately, foster care is greatly limited for those who have become adults, and the foster system does not necessarily prepare young people for adulthood.

Volunteer Program
There are many ways you can get involved, including fundraising, construction, clerical work, management, and mentorship. If you’d like to get involved, send us an email at the link above.
Mentorship Program
In addition to formal education opportunities, we plan to provide mentoring opportunities for foster children in southwest Michigan. Many of these children will have grown up without a stable home environment. We thus hope to match students to available mentors who can provide conversation, time, advice, or other advantages of friendship. This part of the program would serve to impact its participants in intangible ways.

What We Do
We propose to develop a transitional house to provide a community service through which we can move individuals from homelessness to self-sufficiency. While we are targeting the homeless population of Kalamazoo and the surrounding regions, we would like to focus our efforts on the niche needs of adult foster children who are aging out of the state foster care system.
Specifically, this project has the following goals:
• Acquire a single multi-room house to be used as temporary, emergency housing for foster children who have aged of of foster care with no available housing.
• Provide mature, loving mentorship opportunities for the tenants of our house to better serve them.
• Provide informal educational and tutoring opportunities for the tenants of our house to allow them to become self-sufficient.
• Examine opportunities to expand this housing project after a few years to better serve the community.
While the proposed vision of this project is large, we believe the mission is focused and specific. To start, we propose to constrain the location of our housing project to the Kalamazoo neighborhood.
A Note on ‘Nadia
Nadia is a variant of the Ukrainian name. It is a female name with origins in Slavic and Ancient Greek languages. It was chosen by the founders as the name of this project. In many Slavic languages, the name means hope, an appropriate appellation for this project.
